Video Games [en]

This September, at the Video Games Design Workshop, that will take place in the island of Icaria in Greece, you are given the chance to learn the necessary techniques to design a video game!

The wild and beautiful landscape of Ikaria will lead us to create original interactive narratives and games, inspired by the imagery, the sounds and the life of the island. We are hereby inviting you to join our team, to learn and design, and terminate your visit full of experiences, knowledge, and a game designed by you to share with your friends!

During the workshop the participants will be given the chance to learn the basic elements of game design and development, the role of each and every one of these elements, as well as the design techniques and the creative process. Moreover, you will learn to operate the basics of the softwares used in the creation of a video game, including Unity 3D 5 (game engine) and basic coding principles in C#, Audacity (sound editing), and Krita (image editing). The final result will either be a game produced by the entire team, or separate games created individually, according to the potential of the team. In any case, all participants will explore every necessary creative technique, and will be given the chance to focus on the field of their choice (interaction, sound, design etc).

The creation of video games, due to the spreading of free and open softwares, has become a new kind of creative hobby over the past few years. Many independent companies, the so called “indie”, create games since 1990. Since 2000, indie games started to multiply rapidly, much like the possibilities given to anyone who simply owns a computer to create games in small teams or even individually. Nevertheless, there are multiple essential elements in order to successfully design and create a video game, and need to be methodically analyzed and learned. Also, the techniques used in the production of video games can be used in the creation of artistic works and interactive narratives.
The workshop includes theoretical and practical seminars, full board, excursions, and cultural trips.

The workshop includes
  • 25 hours of practical seminars (design, basic principles of coding, digital sound & sound design, image editing)
  • 3 hours of theoretical seminars (history and aesthetics of Video Games, gameplay techniques, interaction, digital sound, the role of sound design)
  • Printed and digital notes of the theoretical courses, as well as examples of games, given in usb
  • 7 nights accommodation in a double room (shared by two persons) with 6 days of breakfast buffet and 6 days of dinner buffet (beverages & drinks are not included)
  • 1 traditional Greek dance lesson (two hours duration)
  • 1 cooking session- we cook together a traditional Ikarian recipe
  • 1 guided trekking on the ikarian hiking trails
  • 2 excursions around the island (we visit the Archaeological Museum of Campos & we meet a mountainous part of Ikaria)
  • On the last day all the games created during the workshop will be presented, along with a documentation of all the stages of the workshop, in an open exhibition.

The workshop is addressed to adults of all ages, regardless of their knowledge of game design and development. It is necessary for the participants to bring a laptop, in order to advance easily and fast through the seminars. Also, basic knowledge of english is necessary as well.

The workshop will be carried out in english and greek. (the tutors also speak italian, french and german)
